Yes, exactly. Experimenting with film is expensive and by the time it has een returned from the lab, you have forgotten what it was you did to get the image. With digital, it is cheap (free, even) and the exif tells all. You can see on the spot what you have taken and check histograms and composition. What a great boon that is, really.
