Re: DID YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVE OVER 2007?

Last January, I joined our local Photographic Club. Over the past year, I have entered competitions and watched and listened to the judges comments good and bad on my work and that of other members.

I am competing this year at 'intermediate' level, which is a bit more forgiving of small mistakes. I am fortunate to now lead in the 'Print' section and I am in the top three in the 'Digital image' and 'Slides' sections. This has been entirely due to a steep learning curve, self critisism and a willingness to accept advice from my piers in the club, far more than any talent!

Next season, I may move up to 'Expert' level and then things will get very tough, as we have some exceedingly good photographers at that level. I believe I have rediscovered my photography after allowing it to lay dormant for many years. I thoroughly enjoy it and I am sure it is the digital revolution that has been instrumental in this awakening. I never cared too much for darkrooms and smelly chemicals, so relied on photolabs. The results were seldom satisfying, but now I can control the whole process, from start to finish and that has made it more interesting for me.

The combination of a friendly club and plenty of encouragement, there and here on the Forum, has dragged me out of the 'happy snapper' rut I had become stuck in for too long. It just goes to show, if I can do it, anyone can!!
