Auto focus systems use changes in contrast to lock on to. If the lions camouflage was working properly it would melt into everything else around it which may be why it locked on to the grass instead. Try looking for an area of contrast at the same distance as the lion (may be out of the frame) lock on to it (half press the shutter)and then move the camera to re-frame the shot.
