The FZ18 has a manual focus option.

The button is marked 'MF' and is on the top of the camera near the shutter release button. Once activated 'MF' should now show on the view on the LCD screen. You can now manually adjust the focus using the joystick control on the rear of the camera. To return to AF just press the manual focus button again.
