Hi Jude, A when photographing and panning a tripod generally does not give you enough flexibility and does not allow you to turn quick enough. A monopod will give you more flexibility and ensure that you can turn and pan quickly and still keep your camera level. When shooting moving vehicles or any other moving objects your camera auto-focus will probably not be quick enough for fast moving objects. As such it is best to find a location where the vehicles/objects slow down or where you can anticipate the location of the object and allow you to pre-focus in that area. It takes a little planning and practice but when you get a final panned photo you'll be well impressed!
