I'd shoot in aperture priority, so I could set the minimum shutter speed that I thought I could hand-hold (around 1/30th of a second perhaps) and then let the aperture look after itself, but knowing that I'd probably not have a lot of depth-of-field.
John you know that's called 'shutter priority' I think Op has enough to sort out without more confusion
John's not referring to a D300 is he? If so you can shoot in aperture priority and set a minimum shutter speed which, when light falls to the point that the shutter speed isn't long enough, the camera will automatically up the ISO until the exposure is correct.
