Poll - Is photography an essential part of your life?
      #680702 - 19/07/2008 15:18

With the general squeeze on disposable income, brought about by the price of pretty much everything going up, some of us are having to look quite closely at what we spend our money on. Essential items tend not to suffer, but those that we can do without are set to get the chop.

While retail sales are suffering across the country, the photo industry predicts that DSLR sales are set to grow significantly - and Canon is even building to new factory to cope with the demand. This made me wonder under which heading photography comes - essential or not. For me, no matter what happens in my life I anticipate that I'd still have to be taking pictures. I really can't imagine life without photography. Can you?

Definitely. Keeps me sane and makes sure that I get out for some exercise at least once a week! Plus I enjoy the whole artistic process..

Absolutely. I've haven't been able to do much photography for the last three weeks and already I'm starting to slump, anxiety and depression and all that. I'm going out now to get a fix.

Oh aye, couldn't imagine being without it. I love film, but digital means technically unless you print a lot of photos it doesn't really cost anything to shoot.

Yes absolutely. As for my spending in photography, I have learned to spend only whenever necessary and make the best out of my 'outdated' gear.I have not felt the need to upgrade for years until recently (as I am almost cornered into doing it) and even so I'm expecting that my upgrade will give me years of use.

Not really. It's something I've drifted in and out of for 30-odd years.

I voted yes as well, my desk is cluttered with camera stuff, I trip over monopods and tripods on my way to bed, I have a camera next to my bed and several in my cupboard. When I'm out and about I'm always looking at things with a view to photograph them (even if I only have my cameraphone with me). Glad I have a digi now - film is too expensive to snap away with.

Because there three keen photographers in my family, I have to empty the car boot before going shopping for large items - it normally has two tripods, monopods, walking boots etc in it!

It's certainly getting that way.
I've been away from slr photography for a while, but a recent purchase has rekindled the passion.
In a world where everything is doom and gloom, we can literally focus on the good stuff.
Just yesterday I used my new Sigma 180 Macro on some flowers and was like a kid with a new toy - trying to keep still for 40 seconds exposure all added to the fun.

I vote no!

As it is not necessary an essential part of my life, but I do value the enjoyment of using photography to pass time at times...

For sure!

It gives me an output that would otherwise fester inside me and boil over.
It gives me a reason to get out and exercise, it makes me 'see' things rather than just look at them, and it allows me to express a side of me I'm too withdrawn to show normally.

Absolutely, especially as I have 2 young sons and another on the way, I would hate to look back on their younger years and be sad I didn't take enough photo's to caputure their innocence, mischieviousness and downright cuteness, afterall, it doesn't last long! That's what I love about digital photography, it can be fairly cheap. I don't print many shots but keep them all on disks (backup) so the opportunity is always there when the cash is flowing more easily. I am really glad that this is one hobby I can continue, even when money is tight.

In one word - Yes.

With a good camera and lenses I don't see the need to 'upgrade' any time soon. Photography has become such a part of me I can't see me ever not doing it. It's a superb stress and depression buster (most of the tme).

Luckily I don't need to worry too much about money so it's only my in built morality and sense that cost is not worth that limit my spending and as I don't smoke and hardly drink I allow myself a little treat now and again.

Don't sales of some luxuries actually increase in hard times?

Essential? No. Pleasurable?, Enjoyable? Yes, most of the time (except when PS drivers me nuts by not doing something the way I want.... )

I used to be an avid photographer in the '80s then I drifted away from it for a long time before the bug bit again. Doubtless if I drift again I would find something else to do.

Mind you there are times when I feel I'm a little too avid about it........
