There seems to be a lot of chat on other forums about an upgrade to existing M8s and a promise from Leica that there will be an M8 update service for the foreseeable future.
I don't have an M8 and don' really know the details but it does seem to be a desirable way forward instead of the instant obsolescence built into other brands.

The chat is quite amusing, especially the vitriol that was dealt out in some quarters to the person who originally posted the rumours.
The discussion as to the accuracy or otherwise of the rumors was effectively quashed yesterday on leica's website here. Sounds like quite an interesting idea - buy an M8 and then you can keep on getting it upgraded as the system develops.

I agree at first sight it makes sense but we don't know how many of these upgrade packages there will be and the notional that an M8 is forever upgradeable to the state of the art is fanciful I'm sure there are a few engineers in Solms choking on their obstkuchen at what the marketing types have said.
We just don't know how spending money on the upgrades is going to prop up residual values. If the increase in residual value after spending £1000 on an upgrade is not substantially that amount, it's like throwing good money after bad.
Suffice it to say, I will not be participating...

I wonder if this has been spotted?
Leica M8 upgrade ... an alternative
Nice price!
How long before we seen third party firmware updates? A guy down the road can 're-program' Audis, BMWs, Range Rovers, etc, so maybe ......?
