After i have taken a photo with my Nikon 4100, it takes ages for the screen to come back on ready for me to take another photo. I never used to do this. It can't be the battery, as it does it when i have just replaced the battery and does it with both types of battery (AA and CRV3). Could it be the large capacity SD card? It's a 1gb and i used 256mb ones in the beginning.

It could be the card. I can't use a 4GB on my 350D - takes long time for me to be able to take another shot. Check if there's a firmware update that will enable you to use larger cards.

Have you done an in-camera format recently? IIRC, just deleting the old images from the card can leave bits and pieces lying around which can slow things down.

have you re-tried your old 256 card, if it works ok with the old card then maybe your camera does not like the bigger one or maybe it just needs formatting to suit your camera.

Could also be the card. If its an Ebay special it could be a counterfeit card, most of those that actually work are older, slow cards.

What image quality are you shooting? You haven't inadvertently (or even advertently) switched it to TIFF have you (if such a facility is available)?

It's JPEG. I was asking my cousin who's a photographer and she said it's because it's a compact camera. A digital SLR wouldn't do that. Is that correct?

I guess everyone has spun this out for four months so as to make your camera seem fast.
You've not changed the picture settings to a higher resolution have you? Or anything else that would increase the size of each picture?
If you've put the 256 Mb card back in, reformated it in the camera and it's still a lot slower than it used to be, then I guess the camera is probably at fault.

I've been told that it's just because compacts are slower than SLRs and I won't have this problem with a digital SLR.

Possbly true, my Nikon 5400 takes a while to write to the card, but you say the speed has changed, so something must be different. Either its the card or the camera is going sick.
Perhaps it is time to buy a K10D now the prices are falling!!
Typos, don't you just luv 'em!

It was the compact - I don't have that problem with my SLR.
