going on a trip and need a single lense

dont think this should be part of the telephoto lense thread as I want something with a decent all round performance - not just a telephoto. So, I'm after something that will let me take group photos at fairly close range (thus thinking I'll need the range to start at 18mm ish) whilst also providing a fairly decent zoom range. I'm off to Borneo in a few months and don't want to risk messing the camera/lense up by switching lenses in the humidity. Figure that taking a single lense is probably sensible.

I have a 450D with the stock 18-55mm at the moment and was thinking of something like the sigma 18-200mm
Sigma-18-200mm-3-5-6-3-Canon-lens

or even the 28-300mm
Sigma-28-300mm-3-5-6-3-Macro-Canon

whilst neither get particularly good ratings (on amazon) does anyone have any thoughts? I don't seem to be able to find any Canon made lenses that offer the same flexibility. Is there anything I should take into consideration when
