Poll - Your biggest print
      #695668 - 24/08/2008 23:12

Hi All

With the photokina show coming up, we are sure to see a pile of new kit as well as an incremental increase in the average pixel-count of digital cameras - both compacts and SLRs. Although many of us would say we are happy with the number of pixels our current cameras have, I bet there are not many that would turn down the chance of having the same body but with 25 million pixels. 'How many is enough?' is a question we have discussed before, as we have 'how many do you need?', but directly related to the both questions is another - how big do you make your prints? So I thought we'd run this as a survey poll.

Go to the home page to tell us: The longest edge of the biggest print I have ever made was about...

Thanks for taking part.

Damien, is this a poll where we guess how long your longest edge was? Or do we have to show ours first?

Is this the biggest print you have ever had made? Or actually made yourself? Although I have already voted perhaps I have voted incorrectly as I voted for the size of print I have had made, not made all by myself!

In my impoverished darkroom days, 10x8 was as much as I could afford. These days I have an A3 size printer, so that is the maximum.

However, if you flog your photos there does appear to be an increasing requirement for pixels, even though they may never be used bigger than A4 size.

Further, not being blessed with the talents of a Bresson, I do find it necessary to crop, and for that purpose, the more pixels the merrier - all other things being equal of course

A2 with a file from a Minolta F300 digital compact, after running through Genuine Fractals

It looked superb.

Doh, yes!

And you are telling us about the biggest print YOU made (or had made) rather than guessing how big mine is (oh er missus).

Not a great start hey? Oh well, there's always next week

The largest print I made in my darkroom days was around 24 x 36 inches. I remember having to put the paper on the floor to get the image big enough.

The largest print I have ever made, and I made at least 36 each month, for nearly two years, was just over 3 meters by 1 meter. These were mounted in threes to give 3 meter square Prints for window display in a Spanish department store.

Most were taken on 5x7 inch film but some from 2 1/4 rollei negs, enlarged by way of internegs.

When we started doing them, they were clamped to a wall for sponge development. but later we had large plastic drums and troughs made, that only needed 6" of developer at a time.

It was a two man job to handle such large prints.

The biggest digital I print is 574mm on the long side taking into account unprinted margins but that's simply because it is as large as my Epson 4800 goes. I have printed parts of scans from 4x5s that would be 1500mm if I printed the whole picture and they have been pretty satisfactory. I'm looking forward to the forthcoming 25mp which will give more or less an A2 at 300dpi. I just hope the optimistic forcasts about the price won't be too far off.

When I was a photographer in the Civil Service, Ministry of Aviation in 1959, I took some photos on my Contax III with 85mm f4 Triotar lens on Ilford Pan F at the Farnborough Air Show and the department boss saw them - they were much better than those taken by the Senior Photographer (who was on about £15 a week when I was on £7-15-0d £7.25p in new money) so he asked me to enlarge one of an English Electric Lightning fighter to 40x30inches. I pinned the paper onto a table-top in the darkroom- it came out well, showing vapour coming off the so-called 'aerodynamics'of the fusilage air intake.

20x16 and I threw all 9 away because they weren't up to scratch. The tenth sheet of paper from the packet was sacrificed as test strips. Perhaps I should try again at A3 now I have gone digital. The disaster was a long time ago.

Biggest print I had to get done from my 1Ds (11MP) was 1m x 1.5m (that's about 40x60in). It was a commission to go on the wall in an office.

Oddly enough, perhaps, my biggest prints were from 35mm - a few posters I did for some friends of their kids some years back. Can't remember the exact size, but it was either 36" or 40" in the longest side, so I've gone with 38". More recently, the largest is 30".

It will for ever more amen Peter, as I can't edit a poll without wiping it and starting again.

Let's pretend it says MORE THAN 38in.

I had a couple printed at A1 (36in?) from my Minolta 7D taken with the Sigma 70-300 APO DG and they looked good, stretching those 6MP but good.It was of a very angry wood pigeon and one of a mandarin duck. The glass you use is very very important.
