LCD screen damage
The LCD screen on my Lumix FX01 compact recently failed. Having taken a photo with a functioning screen, I put the camera back in the authentic Panasonic case and in my pocket. Minutes later I took the camera out and two parabolic stress fields extending from the left side of the screen had appeared with a darker patch on the right side.
The camera was 4 months old and I returned it to the local Panasonic shop. The immediate response of the manageress was ‘that is impact damage’, which I felt pre-judged the problem. There was no crack, mark or scratch anywhere on the screen or camera body to suggest impact. I told her that the camera had never been dropped or subjected to any forces and had always been kept in the case and that I believed that the screen must have been subjected to stresses during assembly or manufacture.
The camera was sent to Newark Video who, after some time reported that the LCD screen was ‘cracked screen - ‘suspect unit suffered impact’ and it would cost £120 to repair, almost the current price of a new camera.
I would like to know whether all complaints about camera LCD screens are put down to impact damage or whether the camera manufacturers ever take responsibility. If they are failing whilst being used in a normal, careful way, then they are unfit for purpose.
Have others had similar experiences ?

I'm sure that someone else posted with a similar problem some time ago, I can't remember what camera it was. If you do a search you might find it. Anyway, from past experience I'd say that the first reaction of too many shop assistants is to blame to customer.
I think that what you should do is retell the story as told here and obviously insist that the camera was not dropped or handled roughly. It might be worth saying so if anyone was with you when the camera failed and can act as a witness. I'd start calling or emailing the shop HQ rather than the manufacturer, be polite but insistent and persistent. Good luck.

I do not know what you mean by "parabolic stress fields". My Lumix DMC-FX01 has apparently died after 14 monts of use. The camera still takes pictures, but the monitor screen is now useless, being crossed by two pairs of parallel lines spaced around 1 mm (vertical and horizontal) which intersect in the vicinity of the lower-left corner, so that nothing can be seen for the rightmost two thirds of the screen. I am absolutely sure the camera has never undergone any kind of shock or any other mistreatment. I have certainly carried it frequently in my pocket, but always covered by an i-Pod sock. My degree of satisfaction wasn't too high anyway, since the image was not that good, and noise was practically unbearable at ISO>100. I probably will not bother with Panasonic Repair service after what I have read on their prices. And I won't buy from this people any more of such unreliable merchandise.
