Thinking of buying an FZ7!
      #455293 - 21/03/2007 00:38

I have gained a small amount of money and thought of 'investing' in a digital camera. I don't have enough for a DSLR but enough for a bridge camera and I quite like the look of the FZ7, and Im amazed at the low prices such cameras are going for nowadays! I'm gonna try one out at Jessops to see what it's like.I would like some info from the folks on here regarding battery life, speed and ease of use etc and anything I should be aware of.
I won't be making HUGE prints, mostly 6x4s, 7x5 or maybe the odd 8x10. I believe its a 6MP cam and was wondering if that is good enough for such prints. Camera box has it for £154.99 which seems amazing so is it as good as it seems cos it seems bostin!

I have had an FZ5 for a couple of years and am well pleased with it. You can print to A4 easily. The FZ5 has another million pixels but that probably makes negligible difference because the limiting factor is noise or noise reducing measures at ISO 400.

The stabilisation works extremely well and the camera seems to recognise this in that if you leave the ISO at auto it will knock the shutter speed right down before it raises the ISO.

Shutter lag is not a problem but I tried following focus on some swallows once without a great deal of success - not very surprising really. The other thing that I think they have improved on the FZ8 is the time taken to switch on: it's a bit slow on the FZ5 - a couple of seconds while the lens unfolds itself.

The lens quality seems to be excellent (seems to have stayed the same through the FZ7 and 8). 12x zoom at F2.8-3.3 is just amazing. At ISO 100 it is brilliant. I wish it went to 28mm equivalent.

Alf

You'll never look back now you've gone digital Larry! It's the way photography was always meant to be as far as I'm concerned! Enjoy the Panasonic and I hope to see a lot more of you around here now that you have the "digital capability".

Really like your entry for this months "macro" round as well!

Does anyone else have one of these, and know what size filter thread the lens has?

Yep, but only when you use the adaptor, minus the pointless lens hood, or buy an adaptor from them. I find the adaptor works fine, and its on permanently now.

Hi Larry, How are finding the FZ7? I am now thinking of upgrading. I bought a Minolta Diimage nearly 4 years ago - 3.5MP and 3X OZ for nearly £300 - I am just amazed at the rate of progress is price/functionality! Any advice on whether I should get the FZ7 or 8.

Some photo samples would be appreciated. Thanks - Dev

I was looking to buy either the FZ7 or FZ8.
I examined both of them in my local camera shop and while both will give excellent results, I went for the FZ8 as the LCD and EVF were much improved over the FZ7.

I firmly believe that to take good photographs you have to see the picture clearly in the viewfinder. For that reason alone I chose the FZ8. I don't regret it. An excellent camera.
