Those of you who've got a Lumix FZ8, is the noise issue as bad as some magazines would have us believe, or is it no worse than the FZ7 or other similar Bridge type cameras. Are you happy with the camera?

Having always used SLR's I don't know about noise issues compared to FZ7.Yes there is more noise than with a D70 or D200 which are the only digital cameras that I have to judge the FZ8 against but I expected no more with a smaller sensor and 7 mega-pixels.Shooting RAW and with a little processing there is no problem, shooting JPEG with high noise reduction is not good, shooting JPEG with low noise reduction and a little computer work is good. The noise is really not too bad up to A4 size and only really shows at 100% viewing. Hope this helps,I bought this camera as a light weight sustitute for my SLR's but having used it for a couple of weeks I am sure it is going to occupy a far higher place in my camera use than originally planned

donny Many thanks. I've seen quite a few pictures on Flickr taken with the FZ8 and I must admit I don't know what some magazines are complaining about. Of course as you say, there's bound to be more noise than with a dSLR but what use is a dSLR stuck in the cupboard at home, when the FZ8 could be in your pocket.

In our test in the April issue of WDC, we found it wasn't so much noise that was the issue but the heavy-handed noise reduction which 'bled' colours into each other. At low ISOs and on Raw this shouldn't be a problem at all, so best sticking to these. Incidentally, I had a play with the new FZ18 model at Panasonic's press launch last month, and I have to say that the camera did impress. Look out for our forthcoming test in the October issue of WDC where we'll look at it in more detail.
