Hi
I used to be a member of the old forums on MSN aaaaages ago and recently discovered this new and swanky (not a rude word) website.
Can you please leave a message either in my guestbook or here to let me know what you think of my photos?
Thank you!
Marianne

Hi Marianne
Happy New Year! Like the web site, well designed. Some of the shots are great. However, in spirit of constructive criticism, and bearing in mind I am learning at the moment so am by no means an expert, I think some of the shots could be improved by applying the rules of composition. Quite a few of the shots have the subject smack bang centre, a few of the horizons are dead centre and some of the lines are too parallel to the frame (e.g. the boat shot). In some shots, it isn't clear what the main subject is (the shot across the Thames - is it the building, the boat, the person on the bench?). In other shots, the subject is a very small part of the image.
I have been working on composing in-camera and wrote myself a checklist to help:
1. Choose the focal point of the image - normally one main subject 2. Use the rule of thirds - place the focal point at one of the intersection points 3. Fill the frame 4. Move the horizon (related to rule of thirds) 5. Use lines, symmetry and patterns (e.g. leading lines) 6. Use foreground to balance background (depth and perspective) 7. Use depth of field 8. Know when to break the rules!!
Hope that helps. There are some great books out there on creative photography that I have found very useful.
Warm regards
Rob

Hi Rob
Thanks for the advice, I'm glad that you like some of the shots. I'm aware that they are quite basic!
I just take photos of things that I like really, although obviously I want and need to develop.
Not very good at technical details, there are so many things to think of when taking a photo and for me the main one is always does it look nice, of course this is subjective.

Hi Marianne,
I think the best thing to do would be to post some photos in the Appraisal Gallery for people to view and comment on.
I've been to your website three times so far. The first two times it was incredibly slow and the third time I waited so long for photos to appear that I closed it!
Just been back a forth time, you've got a different design... but it takes an age to load anything

Hi Marianne,
Have to agree with Fen here, put some up for appraisal, you'll get honest feedback that way
