i have a D40 and recently decided i wanted a longer zoom lense. I have just purchased a '55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX NIKKOR' off ebay and have just though that it may not be compatible with my camera. Is this true?

I have both camera and lens as above and they work OK :-)
Hopefully this is under the size limit - enlarged from about 1/8 the total frame area:

No, you're more than fine with that one, it's non AF-S lenses which won't auto focus on the D40.
