which lens?

I'm new to all this and dont really have a clue. soon to buy the Canon EOS 450D + 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. I tried it out and realised the zoom distnce is not very far so i would like a lens with anti shake that takes a clear pic from a long distance. It also needs to be as cheap as poss. Any recommendations?

The EF55-250 is a reasonably priced zoom with IS -around £180, or the Tamron 50-200 which doesn't have IS but is around £60!
