DX Lens + D80
      #676730 - 09/07/2008 14:09

Hi

I have a D80 and am looking at lenses at various websites.

Could someone take the time out to explain what a DX lens is.

Do I need any particular lens type for my D80.

I am saving for the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR, that will work won't it?

Thanks, Harry

DX is Nikon speak for their APS-c format lenses. Nikon designate all their APS format cameras as DX format and DX format lenses have smaller image circles designed specifically for DX format Nikons. The D80 (and other DX format bodies) may also use normal 35mm film and FX format lenses.

Tokina also seem to use DX to indicate lenses for APS format models.

Sigma use DC for small format and DG for film format lenses with improved coatings for digital use.

Tamron designate their APS lenses as DiII and use Di for the same reason as Sigma use DG.

Lenses from or for Sony, Canon, Oly, Pentax etc don't use the same mount and therefore won't fit...

AF-s (Nikon) or HSM (Sigma) means the lens has an ultrasonic motor for faster AF.

It most certainly will........ and it seems to be very popular round here.

The AF-S 70-300 VR will most certainly work on your D80 and when you've saved up for a D700 will work on that too! A splendid lens.
