Hello
Although I'm sure it's a stupid question, it's one I must ask.
Are all Nikon AF-D lenses compatible (i.e. filling the frame) with FX bodies?
I want to get a 24-85mm lens at some point and want to make sure it'll work should I upgrade to an FX body.

Yes, all non-DX designated lenses are designed for 35mm film coverage, so you'll be ok.

Lens nomenclature from all maufacturers is a bit of a minefield. Your question is not stupid and you were right to ask. I agree with the previous answer.

One problem you MIGHT find is that the angle of light incidence onto the photosites at the edges (and corners) MIGHT be to acute and MIGHT cause a slight vignetting problem.
If you're in any doubt, ask the shop if you can try it on a D3 (or D700) and see if there is any problem.
I'm hoping that the lenses I have are all as useful on Fx bodies as they are on film and Dx - apart from the kit 18-70 which is Dx only (Not tried it on a film body though...)

Just ot add to previous answers and to clear up any possible confusion, the D in AF-D has nothing to do with Digital. The D in fact stand for Distance Information.
From Grays Glossary

and this can normally be fixed, albeit with slight loss of shadow detail in the corners, post process.

As far as 3rd party manufacturers go, Sigma DC lenses are APS-C only, DG are full frame. Tamron DiII are APS-C, Di are full frame. I haven't sussed out Tokina's naming scheme yet!

As far as I can tell it's the same an Nikon's.......... DX means digital. Looking at their website almost all the lenses specified as DX are described in the specs as Canon or Nikon APS-C or digital - the exception seems to be the 10-17mm fisheye, possibly at 10mm it's a circular or near circular image on film and a full frame fisheye on APS-c format...
