Anybody used one? A lens review t'other week (Nikon 70-200mm) said to get one and make a beasty tele-macro job and I'm interested!

Surely it's nothing but a +2 dioptre supplementary lens - possibly an achromatic doublet, but even so, the quality isn't going to be anything like a proper macro lens could deliver.

Its not a true macro granted, but its still capable of getting some very good results (but that would be dependent on what lens you stuck it on of course - a budget lens won't do as well as a top end L)

No, it's not, but it's surprisingly capable. I use an older but similar spec 500T with my 70-300 IS, and it provides quite reasonable results, particularly in the centre, but decent enough across the frame if well stopped-down. It's certainly a revelation compared to cheaper close-up lenses. As an aside, I used to use it on my Mamiya 645 210mm lens. Anyway, it's ideal in my carry-everywhere bag to give a macro option - it's not in the same league as my macro lenses, for sure, but it's very useful.

It'll go on my (dad's) 70-200 VR beast, for the weight of a filter I really can't see a reason not to carry one. If it gets pretty good quality it's better than not having the photo...
He also has the 105VR but it means carrying it around all the time when really most of my pics just go on the comp, maybe I'll print some off as I progress but for the time it sounds like a good plan. £130 bucks for one

Just be careful = macro photography is like a drug.
One taste and soon you will become addicted and then you don't want the soft stuff - the filters, reverse lenses or budget macro zoom lenses -- you want the hard stuff, the real 1:1 macro lens (and then the canon lot can get into the really hard stuff of the MP65 for 1:5 macro!)
oh and there are no rehab clinics either!

The MP-E 65mm does 5:1(5x lifesize) rather than 1:5 (1/5th lifesize). You can't shoot at anything less than 1:1 on it.
That lens should come with a big warning label on it
