Im wanting to purchase a zoon lense for a D40 and was hoping to get a range of 70-300 or something similar. Ive browsed the net quite a bit including ebay but the only ones i can find to fit the D40 is a 70-200 VR lense for £120 or a 70-300 VR lense for £300 (which is a little out of my budget). Preferably i would like the 300 lens but not sure if i need the VR as most of my shots wouldnt be with a slow shutter speed but at 300 would you see the vibration effects?
To put it simply should I -
A - buy the 70-200 VR B - Search for a 70-300 without a VR (Any suggestions for this?) C - Just save up and get the 70-300 because you will notice the difference and in a few months time you will be happy you saved up for this.

You could consider buying 2nd hand. I see Mifsuds have a 70-300 AFS VR at £269, so that's a few quid saved. See here.
Or MXV have one at £245 - see here.
(I think Mifsuds have a slightly longer guarantee on 2nd hand gear, but I could be wrong, you might want to check that.)

Unless you are always going to use a tripod, I'd be amazed if you don't find VR to be very, very useful.
Put it this way: standard advice is that, for a hand-held 300mm lens on a D40, you need a minimum shutter speed of 1/500th of a second. Given that long lenses have limited depth of field, you'll probably often want to use smaller apertures, say f11. How many of your pictures will be taken under bright enough lighting for you to be able to achieve values like these without increasing the ISO setting to the point where noise rears its ugly head? Not many, would be my guess. I've not used a Nikon VR lens, but would expect for you to get around three stops advantage. This means that, instead of needing to shoot at 1/500th, you could drop the shutter speed to 1/60th of a second.

I've found that handholding the 70-300 VR Nikkor is possible down to 1/30th at the 300mm end but not on every shot - by 1/60th, camera shake is all but eliminated. I paid full price for mine as soon as they became available and have been happy with it even at that price!
ETA...
Just remembered I had these on Flickr - guess which is VR and which isn't... Both handheld at 1/45th f/5.6 and not sharpened centre crops.

At 300mm (even at 200mm) VR is a must if you want to hand-hold I have a nice sharp photo at 1/6th sec handheld using a Sigma 18-200 OS lens (at 65mm) but it's over the size permitted by this forum and I don't know how to do the clicky-link thing :-(

Save up for the 70-300 VR, a brilliant lens. Mrs Heelis borrowed mine at the weekend and got some cracking shots on her D40 and had only used the kit lens and the 55-200 DX VR before. Even though she commented on its weight every shot was pin sharp!

I used to think that but on a nice sunny day I can easily have enough light to handhold at 210mm.
