Advice for a lens to use in Rome
      #662555 - 04/06/2008 11:32

Morning all.

Been a while since I lasted posted, but am after a bit of advice.

Heading to Rome for a week soon. Obviously I'm taking the camera, however my lens choice is limited. I have a Nikon D50 with kit lens and a sigma 70-300.

I'm contemplating hiring a 18-200 VR lens, but am not sure it'll be worth it. I'm thinking the Kit lens will do for most of the narrow streets and monuments, then the sweeping views of Rome from the hills as well.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

I have the Sigma 10-20Ex for use on landscapes etc.

it is a cracking lens and extremely good value for money

Take both your lenses with you. Don't worry about hiring or buying another.
Relax and enjoy yourself :-)

I'd take the kit lens and if I was taking a second I'd go for one in the 10-20mm range.

If I was going to buy or rent anything (depending on how good the kit lens is) I'd go for either a better standard range zoom f2.8 or a wide.

Thanks everyone.

My initial plan was just taking the kit lens, but then I started to worry about wanting to zoom in on architecture and things of that nature.

I don't really want to be fiddling about changing lenses as I don't want to bore the person I'm going with! You know what it's like when you get started playing about!

Think I'll just take the kit lens.

It did OK when I went to Barcelona last year.

Your normal lens sounds like the best bet to me. After having a shot of a mate's 10-22 I know I don't see in wideangle and I think it would take me a while to train my eyes to be able to see shots (38mm equiv is wide for me at the moment ). Superzoom?..Stuff that!...probably not really that much better than cropping.

If it's not a photographic holiday take a compact and loads of beer money

I would suggest that you take what you know best. That does not include a hired lens. If you are going to stick with DX format in the forseaable future then a Sigma 10-20 may be a good buy but spend a a day or two with it making sure that it behaves the way you think it does. As for the standard lens, at least you can be sure that any Nikon offering ain't that bad wide open and is generally pretty good stopped down a stop and a bit.
Don't worry about changing lenses; just take a 'rocket blower'. A 'rocket blower' weighs no more than a tee shirt and pair of pants, so if you are struggling with the weight of your allowable air luggage just be prepared to smell of old pants for a day and keep the sensor clean.

Sound advice from all (especially the part about the beer money! )

For anyone interested the place I was looking to hire from seemed very reasonable in price, and they responded to my emails for additional information quickly, and friendly. For 7 days hire of the the 18-200 Nikon VR lens, including insurance and return courier delivery worked out at around £57. They do Cannon and have started to do Nikon.

The site is called Lenses for Hire Ltd.

Well I stuck with the Kit lens and it was fine. The only time I would really have liked to try the hire lens was to see how the VR helped with night shots and dimly lit interiors.

I've posted a couple of images on the Appraisal Section.

Thanks again for the help.

Having recently had two holidays in France (Paris and the Loire Valley) I found the most useful lens was my Sigma 17-70. It gave stunning results and was wide enough at 24mm equivalent for landscapes and long enough at 105mm eq. for distant buildings and group shots. This is a very nice and very practical lens. In fact it stayed on the camera for the whole holiday.
