Following my first visit to one of these events, I would recommend these trips to anyone who has an interest in Dragons and Damsels. I will be going, anyone else fancy meeting up for this one??
There are plenty of other dates and venues on their diary above...

One for inspiration - Libellula depressa - Broad-bodied Chaser in-flight

Richard it will be good to see you again, I was quite keen to do the Sunday as well but it is my wedding anniversary and one day togging per weekend is my ration! Could I suggest you drop Dave an email and say you will be going - davesmalls@supanet.com

The details of the Sunday meet...
Prewley Moor and Lydford Station
Leader/Contact: Dave Smallshire 01626 853393, email davesmalls@supanet.com
Aim: To see Southern, Small Red and Scarce Blue-tailed Damselflies and other moorand species at a natural moorland site and at a flooded station (SSSI!).
Meet: At 10am in small club car park off A368 Okehampton to Tavistock road (at SX 950880, 0.5 mile SW of A30 junction); afternoon visit to Lydford.
Requirements: Wellies and lunch (Devon cream tea will be provided at Lydford, courtesy of the owners!); binoculars will be helpful.

Of the two, the Exeter meet was of more interest as it is my patch, while I know the wonderfully named “Sludge Beds” which lurk behind the sewage works quite well, I am keen to see where else we go. At the last meet we did 3 separate sites and due to the nature of the environments saw totally different species.

There is a further North Devon meet on the 3 Aug at Braunton Burrows near Barnstaple
Leader/Contact: John Breeds 01271 812552; mobile 07773 085984
Aim: To see Ruddy Darters and other species associated with the dune ponds.
Meet: 10.00am at Sandy Lane car park (SS 463350). From Barnstaple, turn left off the A361 in Braunton at the traffic lights onto the B2321; then turn left at staggered crossroads, following the signs to Brauntn Burrows. £1.50 car park charge.
Requirements: Bring lunch

Another pic, because life is too short... Platycnemis pennipes - White-legged Damselfly

I went to one of the Dragonfly Society meetings once, but every time I went up to talk with someone they suddenly got up, whizzed around the room a couple of times and ended up sitting on the opposite side of the room.

Life is a bit like that...........
Happiness is a big lens, don’t let the little bu**ers get away – I am armed with a 500mm macro (180 plus 2 x) and a 1,040mm (4O0 plus 2 x with the 1.3 factor) – covers most situations. I was tempted by the Siggy 300-800 but it is big money!!!

I’d love to go as I have a passion for the things but a continued lock of success in photographing the little devils even with two ponds in the garden. Unfortunately it’s a bit far from Surrey and my other ‘must do’ Sunday chores.

Taking them does get easier with experience, the only good thing is that they are big enough not to need too much specialist kit to capture. One of the great things with digital is the ability to get instant feedback and see how you are getting on, small tweaks to settings can make a big difference to your results. Looking at the forecast it looks like we may get a bit wet and possibly it may be windy - which is the real killer, trying to get them as they are blown all over the place is never easy, but adds to the challenge... Good luck with your chores!!!

I think the weather will put me off John. I can't afford the fuel to come across and then not get any results, can't really risk it. I would certainly be interesteed in the other dates.

I can fully understand that, looking again at the forecast see http://tinyurl.com/693qyf it does not look too bad. It is very close to me, so happy to have a look, I hope to find some new sites so I can revisit. I am planning on doing the event on 3 August at Braunton Burrows near Barnstaple which is closer to you, I hope you have a good day...
