I am struggling to complete module 4.
I am using Gimp to adjust the curves as photoshop elements 3.0 doesn't support this.
When in Gimp I can adjust the images in module 4 but when I try and save them it refuses to, why is this?
I'm using a Mac G4 with OSX Tiger
I am at the stage whereby my software limitations are hampering my progress with this course, can any fellow mac users assist me with this?
Am I better off getting CS3 at the discounted price and have done with all these limitations with elements?
Please help this fed up student!

Not sure about the Mac version but I have The Gimp2 installed on a WinXP laptop and have known it to baulk at saving a file with "Save as...". I get a gimp message box saying the save failed because of "Unknown File Type".
If this is the same problem you're having, it needs you to tell it what file type you wish to save it as. You can do this by typing the apropriate extension (.jpg, .tif etc.) after the file name in the name field or select a file type from the drop down list by clicking "Select File Type (By Extension)" then it should save the file.
Incidently, when you get past this part of the operation, another "Save as JPEG" window opens (assuming you've chosen Jpeg as the file type). Click the 'Show Preview in image window' box and the 'File Size:' dialog is activated, telling you the size of your file in kb. You can then adjust the 'Quality' to get the desired file size - useful for images to be posted on the forum. Clicking 'Advanced Options' acceses a load more adjustable settings most of which I don't understand but I usually un-check 'Save EXIF Data' and 'Save Thumbnail'.

Sorry Matt - I can't help you with your problem except to say that I was getting fed up with having to use different software for different things as well - which is why I bought CS3 at the discounted student price. Suppose it depends if you can justify spending the money.  Lisa.

Well with CS3 installed and up and running, I have just completed the practical side of Module 4 and with just a small amount of written work to complete it will be winging its way to Laura by the end of the week!
I'm getting my backside into top gear now and already reading through module 5 in readiness to start that on Sunday.
I am setting myself a target of finishing module 5 by the end of November, here goes..........

Yes I was being cheeky Carole but to be dull and boring it took me 5 months, so if you get it in around Xmas you'll have done fantastically well. (Not that I'm implying I'm faster than you, I just haven't got x number of children to look after). Lisa.

Hi Carole,
perhaps it took a long time because I was doing it throughout the spring/summer and there were lots of other things to do. I probably took double the number of photos that I needed too, looking for subjects that would show up colour changes and Part C certainly caused a lot of head scratching.

very wise, Lisa - if you saw what I carry round in a handbag these days (nappies, water bottles, jumpers, spare clothes, snacks, wellies, waterproofs etc etc), you definitely wouldn't take me on in a handbag tussle!!
Les, does this mean that you sent off mod 2? that must be a record if you have done!

I should be so lucky. Mod I & 2 nearly finished though. I think I finished taking the pics I needed yesterday. Went to a few locks along the River Trent and I think some are usable. Did the grey card part of Mod 2 a while back. Mod 1 should be off soon, only have the two pictures of my chosing to go. Why is it so difficult to decide what to take whey you have complete fredom  Les

I know what you mean Les, it's tricky narrowing it down when you have a free rein. I'd say it's worth stopping the agonising and just getting it done and sent off, so that you can get your feedback. If there's any particular areas of photography that you're interested in (eg landscape, portrait, still life etc), it would be a good idea to do at least one of your module 1 pics from there, maybe even both.
How about getting it finished this weekend and sent off - you know you'll feel good if you do (says she who takes forever on every module )

I must confess i have found it very hard trying to displine myself to finish modules. When I did my C&G in photography at college I could manage the deadlines with ease, but left to my own devices I am my own worst enemy and everything is left for tomorrow and then never gets done!
I am trying to do a little each week rather than all or nothing which is what I seem to be falling into at the moment.
I admire anyone juggling work with families as well as this course, it must be quite challenging finding the spare free hour (if any!)
I don't have any kids but working a 6 day week makes free time quite scarce!
However if I can spend at least one night a week working on my next module as a minimum I should make steady progress and aim to get Module 5 finished by December as I reckon end of November is optimistic on my behalf, but you never know?
Hope everyone else is still enjoying it like I am?

I seem to have flurries of activity and then go off it for a while. Like I'm not doing much on mod 7 at the moment, as I don't think I have the skill/am using the tools correctly. So, really I'm thinking about it. Lisa.
PS I've started taking pics for mod 8 instead much more enjoyable.
