Hi Folks,

I am Mark from Belfast in Northern Ireland and I have just started the course. I have been having a look through the various threads, but until today I couldn't reply to any of them.

I have just started Module One. I hope I will enjoy my time here, with you all, and I sure have a lot to learn.

Best regards

Hi Mark,

I hope you enjoy the course & welcome to the forum. I'm just starting mod 3 and have learnt loads so far, and I'm enjoying having to work things out for myself; although, when I get stuck Chris can usually put me on the right track. I have a look on this forum most days except at weekends and will try to help with any queries you may have as best I can. Lisa.

Hi Lisa and thanks for the warm welcome, and so quick too! I should be able to call in here most days, as I am out and about the Internet doing other stuff.

and another one .......... [Re: Almark]
      #399532 - 20/11/2006 22:51

Hi, thought I'd join Mark in saying hello to everyone else on this course. I sent in module one a few weeks back (and laura assures me it did arrive and is with my tutor!), so am waiting with nervous anticipation for the feedback.

I've made a start on the grey card exercise in module 2, and think I understand what I'm trying to do (thanks in part to the many earlier posts on the subject!!) - though I'm going to take the pics again, as I'm not quite happy with it yet. I'm aiming to turn around module 2 fairly quickly once I get my feedback for module 1 (well that's the plan, we'll see what actually happens!!), so I should hopefully catch up with those of you just starting out on module 3, and add my voice to any confusion arising from that one.

I'm pretty new to photography, so will definitely be asking the dumb questions - I've had a digital SLR for a couple of years, but spent a year using it as a point and shoot camera, then did a beginners evening course at a local college over the last year to find out how it's supposed to work. I'm now at the horrible stage of knowing enough to see what's wrong with my pics, but not knowing anywhere near enough to make good pics more often than not!

Looking forward to sharing experiences and advice as we find our way through this course.

Carole

Hi Carole, welcome to the forum - I see this is your first post, and as a new guy here myself, let me tell you that you will be made most welcome. I certainly have, and I am only here a few hours!

Chris, I have read your replys to the different threads (while waiting for posting rights from Laura) and it is clear to me that you been pointing people in 'the right direction' on many occassions. I too will need your advice, no doubt. Thanks for the warm welcome and I look forward to seeing you around.

Hi Carole,

glad you could join us. I think I'm about at the same stage as you ie I can visualise what I'd like to do but don't always achieve it!

I went on a 3 day course in Oct to Northumberland and that was really good. It's a lovely place and I'm determined to go back next year, but what was the best was being able to talk to people who are enthusiastic about the same thing and share knowledge - a bit like this forum! Lisa.

hi, thanks for the welcomes everyone. Mark, I can't believe you're up to 25 posts on your first evening!!

Lisa, I agree that the talking and sharing knowledge thing is really important. That's what I found really helpful about doing a weekly evening course last year. It was good just to have a regular time to chat about photography and see how other people were getting on. I found it helped to keep me focused and motivated too, so I'm hoping to get something similar from this forum.

I think now that it's getting quite active, and there are more of us joining up, that should work quite well. I guess it's self perpetuating - if there's lots of messages, useful info etc, other people will join in, and if there isn't, they won't! (so I'd better make sure I post regularly now, hadn't I??! ........ though if I go very quiet in the next week or so, you can assume that my feedback on module 1 was so hideous that I have crawled under a rock to hide for the rest of the year!!!).

I'm sure you'll find your feedback from mod 1 very positive and useful Carole - I certainly did. But you don't have to be as honest as Chris and tell us all about it if you don't want to!

Have fun Lisa.

Rather than start another 'Ello thread, I thought I would add to this one.

My name is Victor, I am a British Ex-Pat currently living near Munich Germany.
Photographically, i have had a camera on and off for the since '80 or so, but have never really been taught how to get the best out of what I have. I get the odd lucky strike and get an excellent photo but the majority are just average I guess.

I took picked up the camera again about a year after the Canon EOS 10D came out. I had had a couple of point and shoots which had packed up, and an APS in the mean time, but film developing costs were getting beyond a joke, considering all the photos we have and never look at.

Going digital to me appeared to be the answer as development costs nothing... much, and I can print those I want to display myself at home, or use on the web etc.

Since then I have had a 20D and currently have a 5D which I will be keeping for some time. I have already posted a couple of my photos here in other threads and will post others from time to time.

I was not sure which course would be best for me, so I selected the digital course as I felt that would teach me more about out of camera post processing. I have only just signed up, and have not yet taken any photos for module 1. Current sky here rules out getting an "interesting sky" shot so I may have to get a recent archived shot!

Looking at the modules quickly, the course covers some areas that I have never touched before and has already cleared a few points I was not sure about.

My location near Munich offer a lot of photogenic locations. The Alps are only 70km away and our nearest see side is Venice, so I hope to be able to use some of these areas in my project work. As I work shifts, I often have the time to drive to these places for a day or two.

Professionally I work as a satellite operator at the German Space Operations Centre, controlling the BIRD, CHAMP and GRACE systems.

I'm very jealous Victor! I've got a lovely view of Jodrell Bank out of my window at work, but it hardly compares to the Alps and Venice. I'll look forward to seeing some of your images. Lisa.

Hello all

I'm Michael. Just signed up and got my pack last week. Complete beginner so I'm expecting this to be a big, big challenge. From reading the posts so far everyone else seems to be pretty clued up, when I've only just discovered my camera has a menu option.

Started looking through my existing photos for module one but hardly any are suitable - that's why I needed to sign up. Hope you don't mind pictures of dogs as they're my fave. I'm just hoping I can start taking some decent ones.

Looking forward to it!

Michael

Hi Michael, welcome to the course & forum! Don't worry about everyone else being too clued up - I think there's quite a range of abilities in fact, but I know it can be a bit daunting to read other people's posts and think they sound very knowledgeable (I had one of those 'I know nothing' wobbles earlier when reading some messages!).

We're definitely all here to learn, and this forum is great for asking for help or pointers to get you through when you're stuck. My advice on module 1 would be to go and take the photos to the brief rather than trying to find ones from your existing collections that might fit. One thing I have learnt is that you only progress as a photographer by taking photos! doh, sounds obvious, but I've lost count of the number of times that I've thought I had something down pat when I read about it, but when I tried to put it into practice, I failed miserably. So, don't worry if you take a while to get all the pics together - just think that the longer you're taking, the more you're learning (so long as the time is being spent taking photos of course!!!). See some of the earlier messages about module 2 - it felt like it was taking forever to get those photos sorted, and I thought about just skipping to the next part several times through frustration, but everytime I went out, I learnt something new about how to use my camera, so it was well worth the time it took!

good luck
carole

PS love dogs, so look forward to seeing your pics

Hi Micheal, you are most welcome. I look forward to seeing your hound. Mine, a spotty dog, likes to help me take photos, especially when I kneel down. This almost always encourages him to come over and bump my camera with his nose to say (Iassume) quit that photographt lark and throw me a ball!

Hi Michael, glad you could join us!

It's all a con, we're only clued up to the module we've just finished!

I don't know how much of a beginner you are, but I found reading up on photography basics helped me ie depth of field, aperture etc. It took me ages to get it into my head thatlarge f number = small aperture = greater depth of field and so on. OK it may not help you be a 'better photographer' but at least you know what you're trying to do and when the basics become 2nd nature you'll be able to concentrate on other aspects of your photos more.

You're starting just at the right time with dare I say it, better weather/longer days. So as Carole says, get out and take loads of photos and enjoy yourself! Lisa.

Hi Michael, welcome to the forum. All the best advice has been given already, so no need for me to repeat it except to add, have a look at all our mod 1 pics for inspiration on what sort of images to submit.

Look forward to chatting with you here and seeing your pics.
