Yashica for Street Photography?
      #201078 - 08/10/2004 00:46

Why not? Today I bought a mint black Yashica FX3 Super 2000 plus a Yashica 50mm lens for a give-away price. It's extremely light and small, but matches well with a Contax 28, 35 or 50. The viewfinder is exceptional. Not sure what I will do with the Yashica lens, but with small Contax primes fitted it fits into an anorak pocket easily. I rather fancy it with IR as well.

I am also finding the older rangefinders a nice change from modern stuff. Yashica are particlarly good and the older ones are very well made.

Great fun, the rush towards the pixel is taking all the fun out of snappery. Folk are getting far too serious about it all. Last weekend in Dublin I just carried the Rollei and a pocket full of film.

Can't see it myself.......granted there are the inevitable techno-freaks who will insist on over-complicating the issue and arguing over the most incredible minutae but these were just as prevalent with film..........what paper is best..........is multigrade cheating.............Rodinal rules ok..........and similar crap. People like that aren't really interested in the photograph, just in proving how clever they are with technology but hey, if thats what keeps 'em happy then so be it............it'd be a dull world if we all thought and acted the same (much as the powers that be would like it)........

Look how excited a Will and Erm are getting, much more of it and Erm'll explode.............

Just what I meant Nigel, over complicating the big issue (capturing the picture) by spending so much time on the technology.

Well, I have a Yashica prime 50 that's not miles behind the Zeiss lenses for quality...and I still think that my favourite Contax is the small, light 139.

I so like this little camera, which will become my standard IR job for a while, with an almost permanent Sigma 24 on it. It's lightness is the thing - I must take a look at the 139, Nick.

I dug out my 139 t'other day and put a film through it. First time for months. After using the Aria (which I bought to replace the 139) I didn't like the 139 as much. Not so easy to handle, heavier, and no spot metering.

I consider the 139 to be one of the very nicest of all 35mm SLRs - it feels just right to me. It's solid, not too heavy, everything seems to fall to hand - I'm very fond of it indeed. Not perfect, but very usable.

Agree. I prefer mine to the OM2 in the "small but perfectly formed" SLR stakes.

Don't get me wrong Nick, I still like the 139 - I've owned it for nearly 24 years so I guess I must. But I've grown to like the Aria and, out of the two, I think, now, I would pick the Aria over the 139.

Not tried an Aria, but I like the 139 much more than the 167, say.
It's obviously a very personal thing, but the 139 just feels right to me.

Yes, I had one like yours, with the 50/1,9, and is a fantastic camera that can give you big results. Now is by my father's hands to replace his broken VSL1.
I also have a Yashica FX2 with the 50/1,4 plus a 135/2,8 and a 28/2,8, but is a lot more heavy, and really noisy.

What about the first RTS?

Try as I might, I couldn't find a 139 that wasn't messy. So I have bought a 159MM which is also pretty light.

Messy? The leathers are ALL messy. I have a replacement kit that I've never got round to fitting....

Not tried the 159 - what's it like?

Will do, Seymour, and thanks for the pic, Will: I don't know what it's like because it still hasn't arrived; but due today. But I shall report back. This is a useful run-down of Contax SLR bodies.
