I know Steve has always been fulsome in praise of the 139, and I had always considered it not much better than a Yashica FX-D, and not up to the Contax standard. Well, Steve's right, and I now recognise that it's a superb machine. Couldn't help it - went to a camera fair today, and there was one sitting there with a 50mm f1.7 Planar for less than all the Nikon FEs, OM2s etc were going for BODY ONLY! It's insane - the (equal) highest rated 50mm lens by Photodo and a body that is certainly nicer than the FE, OM2 etc - prices are insane at the moment - still, I might unload my OM, Nikon and maybe Pentax stuff to get a few more bits. Lovely stuff indeed. Although why I need 3 50mm lenses for 2 bodies I don't quite know.....

.......go here http://www.contaxinfo2.com/HTML_Seiten/manuals.htm
I agree with you that the 139 is one of the unsung heroes of the camera world. A beautiful machine and very underestimated.........mind you, I STILL reckon the OM2N is the smoothest handling camera EVER......but then I'm prejudiced!

Thanks, Will - nice link. I do like the OM2, I really do. I personally find the Contaxes (and Leicas - sorry!) smoother, but the OM2 is great. However, prices have crept up, and for an OM2n body to be worth more than a 139 and Planar is more than just a little silly!

Well done, Nick. My RTS and RX have already become 2 of my favourite cameras. And I see we are thinking along similar lines - makes sense while prices are at giveaway levels.

I've always wanted my manual focus SLR system to be the best - I never imagined it could be the best at bargain basement prices! OK, some exageration, but certainly the value is incredible right now. Sadly, the new purchase and the great light has postponed my developing session this afternoon, though.

No, Diane, I really don't! The Yashica will have to go. I do need the two Zeiss ones, of course!

Or it could be that since 50 mm is the closest to the way the human eye sees, that you figure duplication of it is fine. Is that a better excuse? I have two 50 mm FD lenses, but one came with each Canon body that I own. In fact, I have a 50 mm [or the 35 mm equivalent of 50 mm] in all [well, most] of my cameras. I can't guarantee that on the antiques.

Now you've got me thinking, Diane!
My 50mm lens list - I think! - by mount:
EOS (Canon EF) - 2x f1.8 Mk II (one doesn't autofocus) Contax - f1.4 Zeiss Planar, f1.7 Zeiss Planar, f1.7 Yashica ML Olympus - f1.8 Zuiko Nikon - f1.8 E, f3.5 55mm Micro-Nikkor Praktica Bayonet: f1.8 Zeiss Prakticar Praktica M42: f1.8 Zeiss Pancolar, f2.8 Zeiss Tessar, f1.8 Pentacon, f2.8 Domiplan, 58mm f2 Zeiss Biotar, 58mm f2 Helios (copy of the Biotar), f1.7 Cosinon Exakta - f1.8 Meyer Orestegor (same lens as the M42 Pentacon) Leica L39 - f1.5 Voigtlander Nokton Contax/Kiev - f2 Ziess Sonnar, f2 Jupiter 8 (copy of the Sonnar) Retina Reflex - f2.8 Schneider Xenar
and that's just the 35mm ones I can think of!
The best reason I can think of is that they're fairly cheap, excellent quality, and fairly fast.

LOL! Doesn't someone have to get you thinking?
I assume that each of those has its uses?
I think the only 35 mm camera that I own that I don't have a 50 mm lens for is the Leica IIIc screwmount.

Does each have it's uses? In truth, no. I guess I actually use - well, let's think: one per system, except M42 where I do use the Pancolar, the Biogon and the Pentacon. Oh, and I forgot the Pentax last time round!
