Need to find a RTS II repairer
      #251108 - 24/08/2005 19:21

My trusty old RTS 2 which I have had for close to 20 years has developed a problem. The meter does not display the shutter speed (only the aperture displays in the viewfinder) and the electronic shutter will not fire. I can only use the mechanical backup (1/50 only).

Is there anyone that can repair these any more?

Bummer!

Sadly, I can't help in recommending anyone. It might well be the case that a repair could cost as much as seeking out a replacement body - though it goes without saying that an estimate should be sought first. FWIW, Ffordes have an RTS2 for £250

Morning Rob,

I would try contacting Kyocera UK at Kyocera UK and should be able to give you a listing of Contax repair shops in the UK.

Cheers,

Jack

Morning Jack,

I might be wrong, but had thought Kyocera UK had shut up shop.

Rob

You may be out of luck. I had an RTS II, fortunately with a one year guarantee that went phut on me before the year was out. Similarly, the electronics had failed. I was told that the integrated curcuits are no longer available as spares (at least not here in the UK)and was offered a refund. You could consider trashing a camera that has a mechanical fault and robbing the IC.

Incidentally, this didn't put me off and I bought another RTS II which has given me sterling service since. Nice camera

Morning Jack,

Who knows the answer to that. If memory serves, the BJP did mention a while ago that a couple of the former Kyocera UK stalwarts had set up a new company which plans to look after Contax gear. If I get the time I will attempt to re-discover it (no guarantee of success however!)

You do realise that the photographic side of things is not Kyocera's main business, don't you? Of course, they could still have shut down UK operations, but there's an awful lot of people out there still using and buying Kyocera laser printers and the like (me, for a start!) - someone must be importing/distributing them.

I have discovered that Alpha Digital Services in Reading do Contax repairs. They can be contacted on 0118 933 7000. They are mentioned on the following Kyocera page: http://www.kyu.co.uk/service.htm

This is going to sound really daft, but have you tried cleaning the battery contacts and compartment, then replacing the battery? A similar thing happened to my RTSII a few years back, and all it needed was a good clean with a 'Q' tip dipped in alcohol. HTH
