Colour neg film to rival transparency film?
      #352819 - 15/08/2006 16:33

Hiya,

Could users of high quality 35mm colour neg film recommend the best there is on the market please and how close will it get to the quality of the best transparency films? I am looking to get a slow film to enlarge to 12X10 inches with general subjects.

cheers Steve.

Fuji Reala's nice and has fine grain, it's good for portraits and natural colours. Fuji 160C is nice and punchy, gives a bit more contrast and is reasonably fine grained, both should go to that size with a decent processor.

Yes I will go along with Fuji Reala, or even Fuji Superia 100 or even 200. I have just had a session printing 16 x 12s from Superia 200 and the lack of grain and sharpness is worth the effort.
Contrast was fine, and once the colour balance are corrected the tones are remarkably accurate. Not so super saturated as Velvia of course but very natural

Not many 'slow' colour neg film about now but there is the Konica 50 ASA being sold still by Photomart of Walthamstow. It is supposed to be very good for portraits; the Agfa Ultra 100 is very good for landscapes if you can still get it, especially on dull days as it is high contrast. I have done sone 16x12" colour prints from it and it is like a Velvia in it's colour saturation.

I love the Konica 50 and still have some in the freezer (mostly 120), but the new Kodak Elite Col Pro is very good, though it likes to be refrigerated before use and processed ASAP.

Fuji Reala gets my vote, I get virtually grainless 12x10 of excellent sharpness from 35mm negs.
