This is an old macro I made way back when i had a Minolta X300, no TTL flash and a measuring tape! Macxro was achieved by reversing the 50mm lens and manually working out the flash to subject sitance with a tape measure, and accounting for pupillary magnification factor due to using an asymmetrical lens(phew!) Luckily this one isnt that high a mag, about half lifesize.

I know this was posted a while ago; but I've photographed roots for scientific purposes. They can look silvery due to carbon dioxide gas in the cell spaces, and if you look at a clover or bean plant the root nodules are bright red! The tips usually have beautiful root hairs on them which only show up in water. Some plants especially water lillies which grow in de-oxygenated mud have an air tube along the stem/ root to allow air to reach the growing tip. In fact, even the simple root can be quite interesting!
