Cross Processing

Which way round does this work?

Negatives developed in E6 chemicals?
Or Slides developed as in C41?
Or does it work both ways?

IMHO, it doesn't work at all...

However, it can work either way.

E6 usually devved in C41 so they can be printed on colour paper with added contrast - in some situations the resulting prints can look quite good. It depends on what result you want. C41 devved in E6 looks rubish IMHO. You get positives with a browny orange colour cast from the base layer (slide film doesn't have this base layer).

I used to do a lot of cross-processing at college because it gave the results I wanted. Though most labs won't develop your films as some believe the film itself reacts to the chemicals and so contaminates other neg films that go in afterwards. I reckon this is a load of rubbish myself, but you never know.

C-41 in E-6... I had some fantastic results once, and here is what I did.
Took some portraits using a roll of 120 Fuji Reala at ISO50/18 (thats EI+1) and used tungsten lighting. Tried to use lots of vivid colours on clothing and backdrop. Then pushed the roll through E-6 at +3.

It came out all lovely peachy skin tones and pastel background. I loved it, but it is not to everybody's taste. I've never tried to recreate the experiment, although I also hear that the old Agfa Vista goes nicely through E-6. Always remember to push the roll in E-6 though as otherwise you will get horrible bluish shadows.

Mind you, I just love breaking the rules of photographic processing, its the name of the game in what I do for a living.

My Flickr gallery has lots of example of cross-processing from a variety of films (Slide in C-41)

When pouring in the fix before the dev - it makes you really cross!
