Why is my smiley coloured?

Most contributors seem to have B&W smilies against their forum name but a few, including me, have them coloured.

Is there any reason for this difference? - it's not related to the number of posts or whether we have posted images.

It indicates whether they are online.

Most icons have an explanatory text which will appear if you hover over them.
