I will be purchasing a D90 but would rather not buy the kit lens. What would be a decent general purpose lens (Nikon or not) that would give me the biggest bang for my buck. I am not a professional but love good pics. Don't want to spend a fortune but I am not cheap:) Thank you for any advice you can provide.

to be honest i would buy the kit with the 18 - 105 lens. its a great lens and only about 120.00 more than the body if you shop around. try dixons on line i bought mine there and they price match, good luck,

The 18-105VR is a great kit lens; I use it with my D5000 and previously with a D40. If you want something of higher image quality, something like Tamron's 17-50 constant f/2.8 or Sigma's 17-70 f/2.8-f/4 are much better optically, but at great cost and much more limited zoom range.
You need to decide what range you want to cover, then look at the options (or ask again for user experiences)

Thank you both for your reply. I bought the camera today with the 18-55 kit lens but am seriously thinking that I will return this lens and opt for the 18-200 lens that was also offered...... for an extra 200 bucks.
