View Full Version : Flash purchase??

I am currently using a Canon EOS550D with 18-55 lens and a 55-200 telephoto lens, a lot of my photos are taken at night in darkness or low light conditions. The built in flash on the 550D is not too bad for subjects that are close, however a lot of my subjects are a little timid and tend to be a little further away. I would like some advice on flashes that would be suitable for possibly using my telephoto lens with.

Hi Steve,

It mostly depends on the distance to the subject rather than focal length (unless, of course, you're shooting wide angled, in which case you'll get a bright spotlight effect).

If there's 30ft or less between you, then this might suit your needs. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CANON-SPEEDLITE-199A-FLASH-UNIT-/150808866415?pt=UK_Photography_Flash_Adapters&hash=item231ce8ae6f#ht_500wt_969

Here's the manual showing the distance guides on page 8. http://www.cameramanuals.org/flashes_meters/speedlite_199a.pdf (http://www.cameramanuals.org/flashes_meters/speedlite_199a.pdf)

If you're shooting bigger game at greater distances you might wish to have a rummage around in here. http://www.butkus.org/chinon/canon_flashes/canon_flash.htm
(Scroll down the page for some classic goodies.)

And then search online for availability.

Or this may be to your liking. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vivitar-Auto-Focus-Illuminator-636-AF-flash-gun-Canon-camera-box-/390406463736?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_ CameraFlashUnits_JN&hash=item5ae609e0f8#ht_1402wt_952

Have fun and keep warm.
