Why is there such a wide range in price?
And would a cheapy at around £30 from argos do the job ?

Depends on your camera what camera do you have?

A £30 tripod can be a bit of a false economy - they can be alright for light use with a compact camera, but won't be that stable and pretty fragile.
Our advice would be to invest in the best set of legs possible - if they're looked after properly, they can last you a lifetime.
Take a look at the Manfrotto 190XPROB for £105 - it's a fantastic tripod for the price, very stable and can be positioned for a variety of shooting angles. You'll also need to buy a separate head as well and the Manfrotto 494RC2 ball head is definitely worth a look. Manfrotto are also doing some Cashback promotions, so you may be able to save a bit of cash.
