windows 7 64bit software

I am looking to buy adobe photoshop elements 8,but i have read some reviews on amazon that this software either doesn't work or suffers lots of problems on computers running the 64 bit version of windows 7, please can you help with this or suggest an alternative,i cannot afford to buy lightroom or cs2/3 :(
