The 10-megapixel Canon EOS 400D is also known as the Digital Rebel XTi in some markets.
| Pros: | Compact, build quality, dust reduction, improved AF, good Raw file quality. |
|---|---|
| Cons: | Chroma noise especially in JPEGs, position of DoF preview button, limited purchase of right-hand grip. |
In its heyday the 8-megapixel Canon EOS 350D was one of the most-searched-for cameras on the internet. However, with the launch of direct competitors from Sony and Nikon sporting higher piuxel counts, Canon was obliged to respond. And so the 10-megapixel Canon EOS 400D was born.
Now, in a game of 'Top Trumps', the 400D, Sony Alpha 100 and Nikon D80 would all draw if you picked pixels, but the Canon would probably win the popularity contest.
The EOS 400D is much more than just a more-populated sensor however, with a whole host of new features to make this diminutive camera stand out from the crowd. And those features aren’t just for the ordinary, everyday user, but may well appeal to the enthusiast and camera geek too.
Verdict
There's no doubt that the 400D will be just as successful as the 350D, if not more so. Canon has added some really useful features and made a camera different enough to warrant an upgrade, without changing the basic functionality of previous models. Different but familiar is always a winning formula, and we doubt Canon will be knocked off the top spot by the young pretenders just yet.

I have now had my 400D for nearly a year ,previous to that camera i had / still have my eos 300v so all the main body parts and controls are very similar and just as easy to use. the 400 D is the best camera i have owned to date, I get excelent results evey time i use it, my only complaint is the cheap and nasty 18 - 55mm lens that comes with it lucky for me i still have a selection of high quality EF lens's that fit, I am confused with your pricing of the camera which retails in argos, currys etc at round about £400 - £450
