The 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot A590IS boasts an Optical Image Stabilizer, a 4x zoom and a 2.5in LCD screen.

Pros: PASM modes, price, image quality.
Cons: Drains batteries quite quickly.

Feature Set

Image capture on the A590IS otakes place on an 8MP, 1/2.5in CCD sensor, with a 4x optical zoom providing the optics. Not only does the A590IS offer full manual control, but also comes equipped with face detection, motion detection, red-eye fix and optical image stabilisation, and while its body is plastic, the tungsten tones give the A590IS a classy feel.

Image Quality

In terms of image quality, noise is well managed up to ISO 400, with images shot at ISO 800 still usable. Fringing is noticeable towards the edge of the frame when shooting areas of high contrast, as is a slight loss of sharpness. However, the A590IS possesses an excellent dynamic range, accurate metering, vivid colour rendition and betters many of its price-range competitors.

Excellent functionality and a bargain price make the A590IS a serious proposition.
