99 Portrait Photo ideas

Simple tips behind the psychology and expertise needed to capture people at their best

Review: In this book, highly successful author and portrait photographer Annabel Williams bids to inspire and encourage readers to reach their potential. She hopes to show that “photographing people is 90% psychology and 10% technique”, and thus urges readers to set aside their preoccupations with technology and gadgetry, and focus on the bigger picture.

Introducing the piece under the heading ‘be inspired’, the book is a guide to creativity, with tips and practical advice on everything from backgrounds and lighting, to directing the under-fives. What follows are 99 examples of her work, accompanied by captions which can be fairly vague if you haven’t read the surrounding text.

Yet, the 99 ideas inhabit only one section of this book, and are sandwiched between topics guiding you through the initial set-up, taking you behind the scenes of a real-life shoot, and finally, showing you how to organise your pictures. This is a well-organised, easy-to-understand volume that’s packed with expertise. It doesn’t go into too much detail, but aims to keep it simple. A must-have for budding portrait photographers.
