Review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5

The FS5 comes full of technology. The 10.1MP, 1/2.33in CCD sensor is paired with a newly developed Leica DC Vario-Elmar 4x optical zoom. The small body is equipped with a strikingly crisp 2.5in LCD screen and a new image-processing engine – Venus Engine IV. The main ‘experience-simplifying’ features, however, are all function led. Five image-capture developments – Mega OIS, Intelligent ISO, Intelligent Scene Modes, Face Detection and Quick AF – are combined under one ‘Intelligent Auto’ mode, with the FS5 addressing a scene and picking settings to suit. With mode buttons thoughtfully placed, the camera handles well, with images containing fantastic tones and an impressive dynamic range. Noise is well controlled right up to ISO 800, and there is little or no evidence of fringing even in difficult light.

Our Verdict:
Advanced Intelligent Auto functionality makes a real impact on this well specified compact.
