Review of the Fuji Finepix Z5

www.fujifilm.co.uk RRP: £200 Fuji’s Z5fd is the latest model to join the style-led Z series and the first to include face-detection. The 6.3mp sensor records images up to 2848x2136 pixels, which should see a decent 10x8in print, while the 3x zoom covers the equivalent of 36-108mm – ideal for party situations. The maximum ISO 1600 is also perfectly suited to low-light, indoor photography and while the emphasis is on point-and-shoot fun, a manual shooting mode offers a little more control over exposure and white balance settings. The Z5fd’s ultra-slim, pocketable design is complemented by a choice of ‘raspberry red’, ‘mocha brown’ and ‘silver’ colour-ways. While striking, the style doesn’t compromise the camera’s usability, with a well-placed thumb-space on the rear and all the controls falling within easy reach, including an ‘F’ (Function) button for instant access to ISO, image quality and colour mode. In use the sliding front acts as the power control with a brisk two-second start-up and roughly the same delay between shots. The AF locks on almost instantly in strong light, and is far from hesitant in low light. The zoom doesn’t move as briskly and it does whine a bit, but ultimately there’s far more good than bad.
