This is a typically modern, budget-priced, inkjet printer aimed at camera users and featuring PC-less operation, if required, with direct printing from cards or via PictBridge. The R240 uses dye-based inks to maximise print quality and it proves to be distinctly superior in this department compared to the Epson D88 also tested. However, again, there are no extra ‘photo’ ink shades. Despite this, the R240 turns in a good photo performance, only let down by slightly off-colour greys and black density that’s not as good as some earlier Epsons we have tested. Print speed, however, is not good in best quality photo print mode, taking 8 minutes to complete an A4 borderless print. This can be almost halved by using a lower quality setting, though, without that much print quality penalty. Like the two Canons, the R240 prints with dye-based inks onto porous surface papers, so it’s recommended that you protect them for long-term life expectancy.
