On paper, at least, the Epson D88 Photo Edition seems to have a lot going for it; a very tempting price, long life Durabrite inks, cheap running costs and some photo goodies to make up the Photo Edition tag. The D88 prints very well on plain paper and is very capable as a document printer, but its photo printing performance was very disappointing. All our test prints, printed using the best quality driver settings on Epson Premium Glossy photo paper, were too light and lacking in saturation. Some graininess in areas of smooth tone was also evident. And printing is very slow indeed; taking well over 9 minutes to produce an A4 borderless print using best photo quality settings. To be fair, the D88 isn’t actually classified by Epson as a photo printer, but as it is being marketed in Photo Edition form, it really ought to perform better.
