Apple’s new Aperture application is aimed at professional photographers using Mac (obviously) and offers a RAW workflow solution, though it can also deal with TIFF and JPEG files. The interface is cool and classy, as we expect from Apple, and is also customisable to suit your way of working.
Aperture offers a logical route to working with images. Images are downloaded from camera or card reader, or they can be imported from folders on your hard drive. The original files are stored and displayed as ‘projects’, with a split screen display allowing you to view thumbnails as a film strip. Selecting individual or multiple images brings those files into the main window. Similar images can be compared and the best ones chosen. These can also be labelled as favourites using a rating system similar to that in iTunes.
