Advanced compact cameras 2012: our top 5 high spec compacts
Best for full control and top quality from a compact body
Advanced compact cameras, often referred to as 'high end' models, are more premium than their budget counterparts. Although they don't have huge zooms, these advanced models are all about preserving the best possible image quality - achieved via larger sensor sizes through from the 1/1.7in size all the way up to the DSLR-sized APS-C sensor in the Fuji X100.
There's something to suit all tastes, and these highly specified, advanced models are the ideal partner for when your DSLR's been left at home. Here're our top 5 high spec compacts 2012...
1. Panasonic Lumix LX5
£360
The LX5's finish harks to cameras from years gone by, a fusion of current technology with graceful design and features. Easy to use, with plenty of quick-access buttons on the camera, the 10.1MP CCD sensor sees support from a 24mm wideangle, 3.8x optical zoom f/2.0 Leica lens. Sharpness is superb making this a tough premium compact to beat.

2. Canon PowerShot G12
£399
A long G-series history supports the new release of the G12. Although the body is chunky and fairly thick there's plenty of kit crammed into that body. One of a few compacts to offer an optical viewfinder, the G12 also has a 2.8in vari-angle LCD screen to compose and play back images. The 28mm-140mm (5x optical zoom lens) sees a greater optical ‘reach' to set the PowerShot G12 apart from many competitors.

3. Olympus XZ-1
£315
With some impressive features, such as a larger-than-average sensor at 1/6.3in and an f/1.8 4x optical zoom Zuiko lens. The 3inch LCD screen and full manual controls are obviously huge benefits as well, but the main intention of this advanced compact camera is clearly to achieve as high quality images as possible, which it achieves with aplomb.

4. Fujifilm X100
£879
The central conceit of the Fuji X100 is relatively simple; put a DSLR-sized sensor inside a compact camera alongside some of the best optics seen on a digital camera. With the aesthetics and build quality of a rangefinder model, along with an innovative EVF/optical viewfinder hybrid, the X100 is the ultimate connoiseur's camera.

5. Fujifilm X10
£499
While the Fujifilm X10 may not boast quite the same size sensor as it's sibling, the X100, the 2/3inch offering is still larger than in most compacts. Add to that an impressive 4x optical zoom with an aperture of f/2-2.8 as well as full manual controls and an optical, rangefinder-style viewfinder and the result is a stunning compact with all the facets to be the discerning snappers' compact of choice.
